Please click here to see what Prize you have WON!!!

Do you remember seeing these messages pop up on your screen while using the Internet?  They promise the idea of an instant fortune and almost everyone likes to see what they have won.  The sad thing is that these messages (called banner advertising) will often lead the user to places that ask for their personal information.  Sharing your personal information on the Internet can put your safety at risk.  This web quest will help you learn about keeping safe and using good netiquette (or online manners) while having fun using the Internet at school and at home.

You will complete an online scavenger hunt about netiquette at the following websites designed to help students better understand online safety. After completing the scavenger websheet, you will design a mini-poster of the "Top Five Netiquette Tips for Kids" using Microsoft Word.

Process

STEP ONE:

Get a copy of the scavenger hunt websheet from the teacher. To find the answers to the scavenger hunt, you will read and explore using the following websites.

Website #1     http://www.safekids.com/kidsrules.htm

Website #2     http://www.cybercrime.gov/rules/kidinternet.htm

Website #3     http://www.computerlearning.org/RespCode.htm

Once you have explored all the websites, double-check that all information has been completed and hand in the websheet to the teacher for review. If everything is complete and correct, you will be able to continue to STEP TWO.  If your websheet is incomplete, you may have to revisit the websites again to find the missing information.

STEP TWO:

Once your websheet has been checked, you can begin your mini-poster.  Using your websheet as a guide, decide which of the rules listed are the most important for online safety and good computer manners when using the Internet.  Think if you can combine any of the rules which would go together.  Work on this until you have narrowed the list to five rules.  Then open up Microsoft Word and create a one-page mini-poster for your five top netiquette tips.

Do the best job you can.  If you have forgotten how to insert pictures or clipart into your Word document, you should complete your mini-poster with text only.  The pictures or clipart will be added at a later date.  Once you have designed the mini-poster,  double-check that all information has been included and mini-poster is complete.
Don't forget to save your poster in your folder for your computer class as

[your name] Internet Safety Poster

Print out one copy, label your poster on the back with all the information that we normally use for class (use the posters on the computer room wall) and hand your work in.
